Was Jesus a Liberal?

Misconceptions About Jesus’ Purpose on Earth

I have heard from many people today that Jesus was a liberal or, that He was a socialist. Mostly this comes from “Progressive”, or more “liberal” Christians and some non-believers. The feeling from these groups is that Jesus was all about Love, Peace, inclusiveness, and diversity. Sound familiar? The verbiage certainly does. Their beliefs echo the feeling from the secular world we live in today. And this view could not be more wrong. It’s time we stop all this new-age nonsense.

Yes, Jesus loves everyone unconditionally as any parent would love their children, but we must understand why He came to live among us in the flesh. Let’s be clear about this. Jesus DID NOT come to save us from disease, disabilities, disasters, or even poverty. Jesus came to save us from ourselves. He came to save us all from sin. We need to look no further than the Word of God to tell us His purpose.

Matthew 9:10-13

This passage is the one progressives point too when talking about Jesus being all about inclusion and diversity. They’re missing the point. Yes, I’ll affirm that Jesus was eating with sinners and tax collectors, but this doesn’t mean that He sinned with them. He was there to show them the Light. To “plant seeds” and lead them to repentance and faith.

Matthew 10:34-35

In these verses, Jesus Himself describes why He came. He came to separate the believers from the non-believers, or, as John the Baptist tells us, to separate the wheat from the chaff (Matt. 3:12).

John 3:17-18

In this passage, Jesus is talking with a member of the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus. Jesus is describing to him the whole purpose for Him coming to Earth. It is NOT to condemn the world or even to spread love, diversity and inclusiveness. He came to save us all from sin.

Luke 19:9-10

Here we see Jesus is again eating at a sinners house. A tax-collector named Zacchaeus. Jesus again confirms with everyone that He came to save the spiritually lost.

I pray that some of these examples will, at the very least, give you more insight into why Jesus came to live as a human. Maybe you can use some of this information as a starting point to begin your own study into this topic. In any event, thank you so much for reading this!
